Ever since I was a young child, I've wanted to learn to fly. Finally I'm making it happen, and it has been an amazing experience learning with Mount Paragliding. Darrell's energy and enthusiasm for the sport is so contagious and flying with him is always fun. He is very generous with his time and clearly passionate about developing his students into really competent pilots. Darrell is great at demystifying flying and his explanations are often funny and quite colourful! In air I get enough instruction to be safe and enough freedom so that I am learning. Having him on the radio when you're flying is the best kind of encouragement you could ask for. At the end of every training day I just can't wait for the next one. See you on the hill!

Paragliding with Mount Paragliding ticks all the boxes: have the best instructor, meet amazing like-minded people, be able to be in beautiful sceneries, fly on day 1, feel safe and excited!

It is a real privilege to have someone so passionate about paragliding like Darrell as an instructor. He is so professional, calm, clear giving instructions and such a happy guy! You know he's got your back every moment, letting you learn on your own pace so you are understanding what is happening and why.

I just started, my first day handling a proper wing size (2nd day handling a wing) and I was able to FLY!!!... and twice!  everybody is so supportive, helpful and kind, that gives you the motivation and courage to do it.

Darrell was on the radio giving me instructions that were so easy to follow, so I felt really safe and I could completely enjoy the experience and the view!
This is been the best desition and I completely 100% recommend Mount Paragliding!

Looking forward to riding the wind again!

This has been an awesome experience from the beginning.

Darrell has a great way of teaching I feel safe yet always progressing. My ground control is coming along nicely and my confidence growing every day.

I had my first flight off the mount on Tuesday 25/4 and wow I am hooked. What a feeling to fly.

It’s a real community feel, with a bunch of like-minded people from diverse backgrounds and ages supporting and encouraging each other in a really positive and fun way.  Darrell’s calm and clear instructions and advice are just what you need when taking on something outside of your comfort zone.   His focus on safety and his patient approach in explaining not just what to do, but why, and taking time to ensure you ‘get it’ before moving on gave me lots of confidence.

I want to say thankyou so much for taking me through this experience.  Saturday was truly one of the most enjoyable days I have had in many years.  Everything you taught suddenly made perfect sense, and your reassuring voice over the radio gave me the confidence I needed.

I qualified as a PG2 pilot in South Africa, and discovered that to convert the licence to NZ standards there were several hoops to jump through.
During this process, I flew with schools in Queenstown and Auckland, before settling back into the Bay of Plenty.
I got in touch with Darrell at Mount Paragliding to help me finish my licence conversion, and to connect up with the paragliding community here.

Darrell creates a super supportive and encouraging environment to learn in.

Asides from being very patient and generous with his time, he has offered great suggestions and alternatives to the methods I had previously learn't and techniques which I have found most comfortable and have now adopted.
I have also picked up quality merchandise through Mount Paragliding at reasonable prices.

For anyone thinking about hitting the skies, I highly recommend Darrell at Mount Paragliding.

Paragliding is an extreme sport. Every student will have their own reasons for wanting to participate, their own experience, ability and confidence level.

Darrell has a process that identifies individual needs and gives students the skills and techniques to become pilots, the space to develop without pressure and the confidence to become self reliant.

Personally, I  had serious doubts about my own ability, but Darryll has guided me to the point where I have developed the self confidence to fly alone, the knowledge to know when to stay on the ground, the understanding of wind, terrain and weather conditions, and the foresight to always check and talk with local and experienced pilots.

Darrell is generous with his time and knowledge. He encourages students to ask questions and, even after qualifying as a pilot, remains fully available for information, support and advice.

He has an extensive selection of wings and harnesses available to ensure students learn with appropriate equipment and make informed decisions on any gear they may wish to purchase.

Friends had advised me that he was a calm and patient instructor, safety conscious, and generous with his time. He has been all of those things and more, sharing his extensive knowledge of the sport and forecasting of the weather conditions, and the learning gained from the experiences of himself and others.
Darrell has a range of equipment available for different sizes, conditions, and levels of progression, and students get to fly a number of different sites which gives them better a understanding and further develops their ability. Equipment can be purchased from him at competitive prices once the student is ready for that.
After a fun day of flying and hanging out with a group of  like-minded people, at varying levels of progression, I find I can't wait for the next time! It's been the perfect complement to my other favourite pastime, kitesurfing, and for the first time in years I look forward to the light wind days.

A year on I have now enjoyed exhilarating solo flights from the Mount, Matata, Raglan, Ruapuke, and the Paeroa Range. There is still plenty to learn, and many other places to explore from this unique perspective.  Thanks Darrell!

Requiring passive supervision, site briefings, weather and other local information Darrell
has proved to be welcoming, informative, supportive and, most importantly, fun to be around.
With some experience of other schools and instructors that allows me to make comparisons, what I like
about Darrell is his calm but confident teaching style and intelligent approach to the theoretical and
practical side of training. The equipment is well maintained, in very good condition and Darrell is highly organized.

The community of students and graduate pilots that has grown around Darrell is another hugely positive
part of my experience with Mount Paragliding. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting fellow fliers and
making new friends.
Paragliding with Darrell and his community will continue to be a major part of my annual vacations to
New Zealand, if not the focal point! Paragliding with a good group, this group, is highly contagious!

If the fact that you get to fly isn't amazing enough, you get to do it in the most beautiful parts of the country with a great bunch people! Darrell is super passionate about getting people's feet off the ground and you can tell he genuinely wants you to see you succeed. One of the coolest things is that no one is ever left out of the loop. Darrell makes sure to let everyone of the students know what's going on at all times and make sure everyone is on the same page.
I am absolutely loving learning how to paraglide and will absolutely recommend Mt Paragliding to anyone wanting to learn, so they can get the best learning experience possible!
